Oct 31 2007 2007 Sport Leadership Conference

2007 Sport Leadership Conference - Halifax, Nova Scotia

On October 11-14th myself and a record number of sailing coaches attended the Sport Leadership conference in Halifax , Nova Scotia including Sarah Urguhart, Amy Goman, Mike Todd, Brian Todd and Ken Dool.

The conference is a fantastic opportunity to join coaches from other sports, sport leaders, administrators, athletes and funding and support partners from across Canada . The sharing of knowledge, experience and participation in cutting edge workshops is the theme of the conference.

All workshops at the conference are presented by leading experts in the field. Sessions included nutrition, training tips, leadership, administration, grants, LTAD, best coach practices, sport science, experiences from Olympic coaches and athletes and much more! One of the most beneficial parts of the conference is the opportunity to renew and refresh energy and ideas for our own sport and to open our eyes to other practices, lessons and experiences to bring back and adapt to benefit our sailing programs.

One of my favorite parts of the conference is the speakers. The opening, closing, lunch and dinner speakers were comprised of marketing leaders in sport, Olympic athletes and coaches and program developers.

The Women in Coaching luncheon in particular featured Michelle Leigh, from Mariposa Skating Center and Carol-Angela Orchard from gymnastics, both Olympic and World Championship coaches that have developed some of Canada’s most successful athletes in their sport. Both speakers brought coaching and training back to the basics of passion, hard work and determination. The message from them very clear and hit home in a time where coaches and athletes are constantly searching and developing new and innovative ways to train and hopefully achieve high performance, they stress that what works for them and their athletes is keeping it simple, passion and hard work.

This is the second Sport Leadership conference I have attended and I strongly encourage any coach to take part in the annual Sport Conference for coach education, networking and for the development of our sport. I welcome any athlete or coach to contact me for further information on the upcoming conference.

A special thank you to the Canadian Yachting Association and Ontario Sailing for their support in allowing me to attend the conference.
