Jul 23 2007 Sarnia Sail Fest - 2007

Sarnia Sail Fest is an annual training day and regatta that is hosted by Sarnia Yacht Club. This year Sail Fest was also the Ontario Sailing and CYA Championships.  Classes at the event were 29er, 420, Laser >>, Laser, Laser Radial, Byte, C2.

The training day on Friday was run by race coaches attending the regatta with their race teams.  Light winds on the training day allowed for an excellent opportunity for youth participants to practice their racing skills in current.  Many considered it a valuable experience to receive coaching from many different people throughout the day as well as to train with new people.  The drills throughout the day focused on current as well as fine tuning racing skills.  For many youth sailors current is a new challenge as most Junior Sail Programs in Ontario do not have any or it is very weak.  Sarnia offers a 6 knot current for sailors practice the Gold Sail VII skills of racing in current.

Shifty conditions and strong current on Saturday proved challenging for developing and seasoned racers.  Depending on the fleet, sailors had 4 – 7 races on Saturday, leaving many tired and hungry coming off the water.  Sunday provided heavier air allowing for faster paced races with 3-6 races depending on the fleet.

Thanks are extended to everyone at Sarnia Yacht Club that made the day possible.  The efforts of Joanne Abbott should be specifically recognized for her organization of the event.  Further thanks go out to the coaches that helped run the training day.  It could not have been done without you.
