Race Officer/Management Seminars

Race Management Assistant Race Officer (Level 1) & Club Race Officer (Level 2) 

The Ontario Sailing Race Management Committee has course conductors certified by the Canadian Yachting Association available to run workshops in race management in your area. If there is sufficient interest within your club or class association, a workshop can be arranged right in your home club.  If you would like to arrange for a course to be run at your club please contact Eryn Sullivan at programs@ontariosailing.ca or 1-888-672-7245 ext. 227.

Assistant Race Officer (Level 1) Theory

  • Duties and responsibilities of:
    • Recorder
    • Timer
    • Flag Officer
    • Sound Signaler
    • Line Judge
  • Basic compass skills
  • Setting and maintaining start/finish lines

Club Race Officer (Level 2) Theory: Application form 
  • Duties and responsibilities of leading a Race Management Team
  • Regatta Organization
  • Compass Skills - Calculating race course

Mark Setting Theory
  • Duties and responsibilities of the Mark Setter
  • Safety Issues
  • Equipment
  • Selecting and Calculating Courses
  • Anchoring Techniques

  • Includes practical examples/demonstration

Prerequisite

Level 1 Seminar & some experience setting marks.

Registration

All workshops are intended to be self-supporting. Therefore all workshops are scheduled with a pre-registration date and a minimum registration clause. If the minimum number of registrants have not replied by the pre-registration date, the workshop will not be conducted as scheduled.

 
Duration

The Level 1 course is approximately 3 hours.  Level 2 and Mark Setting courses take approximately 9 hours to cover the theory and some practical demonstrations. Depending upon the area and the availability of course conductors, workshops can be structured to run during a weekend or over three evenings.

Friday night and Saturday (Fri. 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm & Sat. 9:00 am - 5:00 pm)
Saturday & Sunday (Sat. 9:00 am - 5:00 pm & Sun. 9:00 am - 3:00 pm)

3 Night Workshops
Sample schedules
A specific evening for three consecutive weeks (Tuesday from 6:30 pm - 9:30 pm)
Three consecutive evenings (Mon., Tues., Wed. from 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm)

NOTE: Starting and ending times will be decided with the advice of the local workshop coordinator.
